I.R.P.C.S./ ColRegs/ International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea.
This is a training programme for learning this essential part of skippering knowledge. The rules are written out in full, following each rule there is a brief explanation of the important points taken from the viewpoint of a small craft. After most of the explanations there are short tests, which are reminders of the key words or concepts for that rule. A candidate for the RYA Yachtmaster exam should be aiming to achieve at least 80% pass marks. A good understanding of these rules is essential for all people who go to sea in sailing and power craft.
This course can be begun at any point, however, it is easier to grasp some of the complexities of the rules if you start at Rule 1, then follow the links at the bottom of each page to the next section. If you get lost at any point, clicking the INTRODUCTION link, will return you to this page.
There are several sections, after each there is a short test. If you answer any incorrectly, go back and read through the rule again.
To make the tests easier to take, try pressing the F11 button, this will open the viewing area of your screen up, a second press on the same button will restore it to normal.
